W. Elorda’s Snapshots – Washington D.C.

Snapshots – Washington D.C.

Good morning my lovelies.

Happy Friday! I hope that you are having a wonderful day today, and if your day is just starting, then I hope that you have a wonderful day.

My week has been going pretty well, though I am excited for the weekend? How about you, do you have any plans?

Today, I’m going to share some snapshots of my vacation to Washington D.C – including my favourite photo from each of the museums that I visited.

This was my second time visiting the Nation’s Capital and it was just as enjoyable as the first time. I do recommend it if you are someone who enjoys museums.

All of these photos were taken using my iPhone 12. I did take my 35mm Canon AE-1 Program, but I have not had the film developed yet, so I will be sharing those in a future post.

I’ll get started with my Monument/Memorial Snapshots!

Washington D.C. Monuments/Memorials

Washington Monument & Capital Building

I’ll start with the Washington Monument. This photo was taken from the end of the reflecting pool, just before you reach the steps for the Lincoln Memorial. You can see the Capital Building in the background. I love the clouds in the background as well.

Washington Monument

Here is the Washington Monument from a different location. This was taken from the Tidal Basin, and I managed to get a full reflection this time. I like the little dots from the streetlights.

Lincoln Memorial – Outside

Here is the Lincoln Memorial from the outside. There was construction/renovations being done to the stairs, so the entry way to the hall where the statue sits was narrowed quite a bit.

I love the way this Memorial is lit up in the dim light of the evening.

This was taken from the same point as the first photo of the Washington Monument, close to the edge of the reflecting pool.

Lincoln Memorial – Statue

This photo was taken the following day, earlier in the afternoon, so the light was still good.

I find this statue quite mesmerizing, I could stand and just look at it for hours. The little details are astounding.

Jefferson Memorial – Outside

This is the outer view as you approach the Jefferson Memorial. This was my first time visiting this monument.

Unfortunately I couldn’t get a good photo of the statue inside as the lights were too harsh to capture the detail of the bronze statue.

It’s still a magnificent structure though. I look forward to seeing it again when the renovations are complete.

That’s all of my snapshots of the monuments and memorials. Next I will be sharing the photos I took while just wandering around and exploring!

Out and About

Andrew W Mellon Auditorium and EPA Building

This photo was taken from the steps outside the Smithsonian National Museum of American History and features the Museum’s fountain, as well as the Andrew W Mellon Auditorium and the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) Building.

I adore the architecture of these buildings, and I often find myself sad that architecture moved towards buildings made of glass instead of stone.

Smithsonian Castle

This photo of the Smithsonian Castle was taken from the Moongate Garden. I love the architecture and just general vibe of this building. It just stands out from everything else that is around it. I also love that it is surrounded by gardens.

The Castle was sadly closed, but I would love to get the chance to explore it during a future visit.

Trees illuminated by a street lamp.

I just thought the trees looked so pretty illuminated by this street lamp.

I managed to snag this photo before a pair of headlights passed by and ruined the ambient lighting.

This was taken on the road leading between the George Mason Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial.

Last but certainly not least, I will be sharing my favourite photo from each of the Museums I was able to visit I during my trip!

Museum Favourites

The following photos will be shared in the order of Museum visits.

Helicoprion Fossil.

Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History – I’m a huge shark nerd, I’ve been fascinated by them since i was very, very young, so of course my favourite photo from the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is of a pre-historic shark fossil.

The Helicoprion sharks are thought to have had a whorl of teeth, similar in shape to a buzz-saw that allowed them to grip their prey.

Starlight Concourse

National Gallery of Art – Instead of picking an individual piece of art, my favourite photo from the National Gallery of Art is of the Starlight Concourse that connects the West Building to the East Building, where the Modern Art is housed.

The lights are constantly moving as you make your way across the concourse. They are very pretty.

(I’m facing the East Building here.)

The Solar System

Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum – This model of the Solar Systems hangs in the Kenneth C. Griffin Exploring the Planets Gallery.

There was a lot of really cool stuff to see in this Museum, so picking a photo was hard, but I went with this one because it just sparked the most joy as I was looking back through them.

I hope it visit the Steven F. Unvarnished-Hazy Center at some point in the future so I can see all of the planes that the Museum’s collection has to offer. (Military History nerd.)

Inflatable Sherman Tank

International Spy Museum – Pictured is an inflatable Sherman Tank that would have been used as a decoy by the British Army during World War II. You can see this as you are exiting the Museum exhibits and heading towards the gift shop.

This was my second time visiting the International Spy Museum, and it really is one of my favourite places to visit in D.C. There is so much to see and learn, I highly recommend if you are a fan of spy movies, or it’s an aspect of history that interests you.

And those are all of my Snapshots from my trip to Washington D.C. Which was your favourite of the ones I shared?I
